One year ago the Edda Fjord, a Norwegian offshore supply vessel, found Austin’s boat off the coast of Bermuda. On Saturday, the one year anniversary of this event, Håvard Melvær, captain of the vessel, sent Austin’s Father a heartfelt letter. It follows.
“Dear Blu, Today it is one year since we stumbled upon your son’s boat in N 32′ 11.65′ W061′ 51.27 and I just wanted to send a few words on behalf of the crew and I.
Edda Fjord has just returned to its home port for classification and maintenance after finishing a project on a windfarm called GodeWind in Germany. After drydock and other repairs we will head for another similar job in mid April.
The crew on board today only consist of a few of the same persons that were on board one year ago, but we think and talk about the boys, the families and the events on a regular basis. We also follow the great work you do to increase the maritime safety in Florida and we are very impressed.
I think it really does make a difference. We really hope that you are all well and we just want you to know that we are all thinking of you today. We are always here if you need something and if you ever want to visit the vessel you are most welcome.
Yours Sincerely,
Captain Håvard Melvær”
Blu responded,
“Dear Captain Melvær,
It’s great to hear from you, and to hear that you and your fine crew are doing well. It goes without saying that we are eternally grateful for the concern and compassion with which you and the crew of the Edda Fjord helped our family find some degree of closure with the recovery of our Son’s boat. I’m sure that some commercial crews may have seen this as an unwelcome delay, which makes your efforts even that much more commendable.
In our eyes, the care taken and the time spent to return the boat to our family reflects the kindness and humanity, not only of you and your crew, but of all Norwegian People. You are a worthy ambassador for your country.
Thank you for your gracious invitation to tour the Edda Fjord. It is my hope that someday you will visit us here in Florida; know that you are always welcome here with open arms.
Thank you all again for helping us try and heal our broken hearts.
Your friend,
Blu Stephanos”
